What Wall Preparation Actually Involves

The basic checks and stages that support a more even interior finish.

A sound painted finish begins with the condition of the surface beneath it. Wall preparation is the sequence of checks and preparation work carried out before paint is applied, helping new coatings adhere properly and making surface defects easier to identify. The exact method depends on the wall’s material, its existing coating and the condition of the room.

1. Protect the room before work begins

Remove small furniture and other movable items where possible. Cover remaining furniture and floors with suitable dust sheets, and protect sockets, switches, light fittings and fixed joinery from dust and splashes. Keep access routes clear and make sure the room is adequately ventilated without creating conditions that spread dust through the rest of the property.

Good preparation also includes checking the wall for signs of water ingress, condensation, mould or movement. Painting over an active damp problem can conceal the visible symptom while leaving the underlying cause unresolved.

2. Clean the surface

Dust, grease, cooking residue, smoke deposits and everyday grime can prevent paint from bonding evenly. Clean the surface with a method appropriate to the existing finish, following the product instructions and avoiding excessive water on plasterboard, unsealed plaster or other moisture-sensitive materials.

After cleaning, allow the wall to dry fully. A surface that feels dry to the touch may still contain moisture, particularly in cool rooms or around areas with limited air movement.

3. Check the existing coating

Existing paint should be checked for flaking, bubbling, cracking, chalking and areas that sound hollow or loose. A small, inconspicuous area can be examined to see whether the coating remains firmly attached. Loose material should not be treated as a stable base for a new finish.

  • Look for peeling edges, blisters and powdery residue.
  • Check whether previous repairs are visible or poorly bonded.
  • Inspect corners, around windows and doors, and areas behind radiators where deterioration may be more noticeable.
  • Consider whether a glossy or unusual coating needs additional preparation before repainting.

Where adhesion is uncertain, avoid aggressive preparation until the coating has been identified as far as reasonably possible. Different layers may react differently to water, heat, solvents and abrasion.

4. Remove loose material and make repairs

Flaking paint and weak surface material need to be removed carefully. Edges around damaged areas can then be eased back so that repairs do not leave a sharp ridge beneath the new paint. Cracks, nail holes and small dents are commonly filled with a suitable decorating filler, while larger or recurring cracks may indicate movement or another building issue that requires further investigation.

Filler should be applied in appropriate layers and allowed to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Deep repairs may need more than one application rather than one thick layer, which can shrink or remain soft underneath.

5. Sand carefully

Once repairs are fully dry, sanding can level the filled areas and soften the transition between repaired and original surfaces. Use the least aggressive approach that achieves a smooth result. Excessive sanding can damage plaster, expose underlying layers or create unnecessary dust.

Dust control is important in occupied homes. Use suitable respiratory and eye protection where required, follow the instructions for sanding equipment, and take care not to direct dust towards ventilation openings or electrical components.

6. Remove dust before priming

Dust left on the wall can cause a rough texture, weak adhesion or visible marks in the finished coating. Remove it with a suitable vacuuming and wiping method, taking account of the wall material and the type of dust produced. Do not apply primer or paint until the surface is clean and dry.

7. Use spot primer where needed

New filler, exposed plaster and other porous repairs can absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall. Spot priming these areas can help create a more even base and reduce visible differences in sheen or colour. The primer should be compatible with both the surface and the intended topcoat.

Stains, resinous areas, water marks and certain difficult surfaces may need a primer specifically designed for that purpose. Primer does not replace the need to identify and address an ongoing source of damp or contamination.

8. Allow adequate drying time

Drying time varies with the product, thickness of application, temperature, humidity, ventilation and the absorbency of the surface. Follow the manufacturer’s stated recoat guidance rather than relying only on touch. Applying another coat too soon can disturb the underlying layer, trap moisture or affect the final appearance.

Cold or humid conditions commonly slow drying in UK homes. Ventilate responsibly, avoid creating strong draughts that spread dust, and allow additional time where the surface or room conditions call for it.

Important cautions for older properties

Older coatings and building materials should not automatically be assumed to be harmless. Paint applied in older buildings may contain lead, and some legacy materials may contain asbestos. Risk depends on the material, its condition and whether it is disturbed.

  • Do not sand, scrape, burn off or drill an unknown old coating simply to speed up preparation.
  • Stop work if a material appears unusual, friable or difficult to identify.
  • Seek competent advice and, where appropriate, arrange suitable testing before disturbing suspect materials.
  • Follow relevant UK health and safety guidance and product instructions for cleaning, preparation, dust control and disposal.

Extra care is also needed around textured coatings, old lining papers, damaged plasterboard and surfaces affected by mould. Mould should be dealt with using an appropriate method, while the source of persistent moisture should be investigated.

A practical preparation checklist

  • Protect floors, furniture, fixtures and access routes.
  • Check for damp, mould, movement and other defects.
  • Clean away dirt, grease and loose dust.
  • Assess whether the existing coating is sound and compatible.
  • Remove loose material and fill suitable minor defects.
  • Sand repairs only after they are fully dry.
  • Remove preparation dust thoroughly.
  • Apply compatible primer to porous or repaired areas where needed.
  • Allow each product to dry for the recommended time.

Preparation is complete when the wall is clean, dry, stable and sufficiently even for the intended finish. It may not remove every imperfection, particularly in older homes, but it should ensure that known defects are addressed safely and that the next coating has a suitable surface to adhere to.
